Clyne makes semis

Scot Alan Clyne was on the giant-killing trail again when he reached the semi-finals of the Artemis Open at Edinburgh Sports Club.

A surprise finalist in a PSA event in Canada last week, the Inverness 21-year-old knocked out England’s No. 2 seed Andy Whipp 11-6 11-7 5-11 8-11 11-9 in the quarter-finals.

But he couldn’t quite make it to the last stage as he went out 7-11 7-11 8-11 to No. 3 seed John Ronney in the penultimate round.

In the women’s event, Senga Macfie and Lisa Aitken were the two Scots to make the quarter-finals – and both produced battling performances.

Senga lost 5-11 6-11 5-11 to No.1 seed and world championships finalist, Vicky Botwright, while Lisa put up a great fight before losing 12-10 11-8 6-11 8-11 5-11 to Vicky Lust.
