Chris wins Open title

Waverley's Chris Ferguson showed he is ready to step up as Scotland's top junior player after a fine victory in the Heriot-Watt Junior Open in Edinburgh.

In a tight final, the Edinburgh youngster beat Glasgow's Kevin Moran 11-8 11-5 9-11 12-10.

There were another three Scottish winners in a tournament that attracted a flood of overseas entries.

David Jones won the boys' under-15 title and Mhairi Carlton and Kirsty Lobban were triumphant in the two girls' events.

In the closest final of the day, David produced a real gutsy effort to come back from dropping the first two games. He defeated Holland's Richard Schnarder 5-11 11-13 11-8 11-8 11-7.

In an all-Scottish under-17 final, Kirsty overcame Lindsay Ackers 11-7 11-6 11-2 and Kirsty beat Wales' Lea Philips in straight games in the deciding tie of the round-robin under-13 championship.
