Canadian too strong for Clyne

Scotland’s Alan Clyne put up a great show against former world No.1 Jonathon Power but Scotland still went down 3-0 to number seven seeds Canada in the first round of play-offs at the world men’s team championships in Odense in Denmark.

Scottish Champion Stuart Crawford lost the opening match 2-11 3-11 3-11 to Shahier Razik before Clyne took 35-year-old Power to a five game thriller. The former World and British Open Champion eventually won 11-5 11-8 3-11 6-11 11-2 in just over an hour.

In the dead rubber that was reduced to best of three games, Shawn Delierre beat Chris Small 11-7 16-14.

But Scotland, having beaten No.8 seeds India and Venezuela in the round-robin section, are still assured of a place in the top 16. The side finished 18th at the last world championships in India two years ago.
