Can Scots end dry run?

Scotland’s young squash players will be aiming to end a barren spell at the Scottish Junior Open Squash Championships starting at Heriot-Watt University this weekend.

Lisa Aitken, in the under-11 championship, is the only home player to have claimed a title in the prestigious championships over the past decade.

This year, Lisa, from Montrose, will be one of the main hopes in the girls’ under-19 category.  It is her final year in the Open.

The tournament has, as usual, attracted a world-class entry with players from Argentina, Canada, Spain, Egypt, Colombia and South Africa all on the massive entry list.

Former winners include the current women’s world No.1 from Malaysia – Nicol David – and the boys’ honour roll has Peter Nicol, Malaysia’s Ong Beng Hee and Australian Stewart Boswell among the champions.

Stonehaven’s Rosie Allen, who recently won the Irish Junior Open at under-15 level, will be one of the leading home hopes.

The finals take place next Tuesday and spectators are very welcome.
