Lesley McKenna on verge of Olympic decision
Snowboarder Lesley McKenna has revealed a decision on whether to pursue a third Olympic appearance is imminent, despite easily meeting the BOA selection criteria for the Vancouver Games.
The 34-year-old is Britain's most successful ever snowboarder having competed at two Olympics and picked up six World Cup podium finishes, including two golds, in an illustrious ten-year career.
Ranked 27th in the world this year McKenna has tapered down since her funding was cut after the Turin Games in 2006, competing in just six World Cup events this season.
The Cairngorm Ski Club member has picked up four top 20 World Cup finishes including a fifth in Saas-Fee before rounding off the season with a 16th-place finish in Valmalenco last weekend.
"I have my own riding goals for next year and if Vancouver happens it happens - I never intended to base my whole season on it," said McKenna - who finished 17th and 33rd at the Salt Lake City and Turin Olympics respectively.
"I don't think I have ever been Olympic driven even when I was younger - I think that is where a lot of people have misunderstood me.
"It has never been the be all and end all of my professional career and as long as I am happy with what I am doing that is what matters to me.
"I am self-funded so I will have to see if I can afford it more than anything else."
