Edinburgh freestyle star Murray Buchan sets sights on 2014 Winter Games
Skier Murray Buchan has his sights firmly set on the 2014 Winter Olympic Games after being denied his bow at next year’s showpiece event in Vancouver.
The 17-year-old had high hopes for the past 12 months after finishing second at the British Halfpipe Championships in 2008 but spent large parts of the season on the treatment table.
Buchan, from Edinburgh, was the highest ranked British male at the Freestyle World Cup in January after finishing 15th but was later struck down with a dislocated elbow.
The Scot has since recovered but with halfpipe skiing – despite protests – not yet an Olympic discipline the Midlothian skier has been forced to wait another four and a half years.
“Halfpipe skiing is currently not an Olympic event but they are thinking about bringing it in as a display at Vancouver,” said Buchan.
“One day I hope they make it an official event but who knows? I just have to concentrate on doing well over the next couple of years.
“Being injured was frustrating and it meant that I couldn’t go to the British Championships. It was a big disappointment for me because I knew I had a good chance of doing well.
“But I am looking to put that behind me and focusing on improving next season and I believe anything is possible.”
