Underestimate Fiji and you'll be punished, Townsend warns Scots
Attack coach Gregor Townsend has warned the Scots to underestimate Fiji at their peril this weekend as the memory of a narrow victory six years ago still haunts him.
Their last meeting came in the 2003 World Cup when – in a winner takes all showdown - the scots needed a late Tom Smith try and a Chris Paterson conversion to take the victory.
But with Townsend the first to admit that the Fijians – who sit one place ahead of Scotland on the IRB rankings - have vastly improved since then he is expecting a tough test at Murrayfield on November 14.
“Give Fiji the chance and they are the best broken-field runners in the world,” said Townsend.
“The last time we played them, they tore us to bits in the first half, or at least one man did. In the last World Cup they beat Wales and gave South Africa a run for their money.
“They are a dangerous side, they are ranked above us for a reason. They have beaten teams over the last few years. If you give them space and are not accurate, they will punish you.
“We don’t know much about the current players. We know their strengths though. They play at a pace and in a style as though they are under no pressure.
“It is a fantastic challenge for us but we have to focus on ourselves.”
