Townsend wants full-time backs role

Gregor Townsend insists his coaching inexperience should not stand in the way of his permanent appointment as Scotland's backs coach.

The 82-capped former international is currently undertaking the role for Scotland A in the IRB Nations Cup in Romania.

And having been given a taste of the action, Townsend is desperate to maintain the post with Scotland's senior side despite his limited coaching experience.

He said: "It would be a different argument if you were saying to me to be a head coach, because that needs years of experience, but there are certainly roles for players who have played recently, they don't need to take that time out of the game.

"I had been in rugby as an international for more than 10 years so as coach I might be inexperienced but as an attack coach or a backs coach, seeing the game, a lot of players can do that role anyway

"The buzz I got after going through the game on Friday night with the other coaches and then with the players is similar to the buzz you felt after playing the game and the fact that the players are so receptive helps. It is definitely something that I want to do."
