Lions legend Jim Telfer hits out at banned Nathan Hines
Former British and Irish Lions coach Jim Telfer has hit out at Scottish international Nathan Hines - insisting the second row's ill-discipline has jeopardised the Lions' chances in South Africa.
After the tourists' scrum was dismantled by the world champions in the first Test, the Lions lost 26-21 after trailing 19-7 at half-time. Hines was widely tipped to be the man to add some steel to the pack.
But after a dangerous tackle in the Lions' draw with the Emerging Springboks, the 32-year-old has been handed a one match ban and will miss Saturday's second test in Pretoria.
And Telfer, who was in charge when the Lions won in South Africa in 1997, reserved some harsh words for the former Edinburgh lock.
"The scrum was one area of complete domination in nearly every match but proved their Achilles' heel in the first test," said Telfer.
"Nathan continues to attract attention of the wrong kind and someone should take him aside and advise him that he is not doing anyone any favours by his reckless actions.
"The selection of the second row has been narrowed by the citing of Nathan Hines, an unnecessary distraction for players and management."
