Sharks feel Lions' bite

The British & Irish Lions maintained their 100per cent record in South Africa as they turned on the style in the second half to defeat the Sharks 39-3.

Despite dominating both possession and territory in the first half, the tourists only had a 7-3 advantage at halftime.

Scrum-half Mike Phillips charged and offloaded for hooker Lee Mears to crash over with Ronan O'Gara converting while Rory Kockott's solitary penalty proved the Sharks' only score of the match.

In the second half, the Lions were finally able to convert their superiority into points as Phillips scored a superb individual try reminiscent of Matt Dawson's effort in 1997.

Irish centre Brian O'Driscoll brilliantly drew his man before feeding compatriot Luke Fitzgerald to breeze over before full-back Lee Byrne further underlined his own Test credentials with a well-taken try.

Although replacement prop Phil Vickery was yellow carded there was still time for Jamie Heaslip to put the gloss on the scoreline as the Sharks' bite never was felt.

Scot Mike Blair replaced Phillips in the second half.
