Scotland narrowly miss out on opening victory

Winston Wilson kicked a last minute drop goal as Scotland's IRB Junior World Championship campaign got off to the worst possible start following a 17-14 defeat to Samoa in Toyko.

Wing Alex Dunbar's try and nine points from the boot of Peter Horne wasn't enough for the Scots with tries from Falemiga Selesele and Lemisio Faimoa the difference.

Samoa opened the scoring in the sixth minute when scrum-half Auvasa Falealii chipped ahead and fed flanker Selesele for a converted try.

Muggy conditions did their best to prevent flowing rugby but Scotland went into the half just a point behind thanks to two penalties from full-back Horne.

The 19-year-old gave the Scots the lead for the first time after the restart with another penalty before Dunbar crossed the whitewash for their first try.

However the lead was short-lived and when Faimoa pulled the scores level in the 58th minute Samoa dominated the closing stages resulting in Wilson's nerveless kick.
