Paterson packed full of pep

Scotland record points scorer Chris Paterson has no thoughts of retirement and insists he has get plenty left in the tank as he approaches the ten-year anniversary of his international debut.

That was against Spain in the 1999 World Cup and since then he has gone on to set new Scottish records for both appearances, 95, and points, 738, with the try target also in his sights.

But the 31-year-old shows no signs of slowing down with a majestic performance in Edinburgh’s 22-21 victory over Cardiff and Paterson insists the fire still burns strong inside him.

“I don't think I'm ready to talk about the end of my career,” he said. “I feel as fit and sharp, if not sharper than ever.

“I’m 31 now and age can be used as an excuse, but I don't think it should a guide of when to stop. I think I'll know when it's time to stop.

“It’s maybe selfish, but I always want to keep going, want to improve, see what’s round the corner and better what I did last year and win more, but you can't quantify your own performance by what a team might do.

“The drive is improvement, getting better and looking to make as much impact as I can. I don't think I've played as well as I can yet.”
