Mallinder hails retiring Tom Smith as one of the world's best props in recent times
Northampton boss Jim Mallinder has described Tom Smith as one of the 'best' props world rugby has produced in recent times.
Mallinder inherited the Scottish 'pocket rocket' in 2007, taking up the head coach's role at Franklin's Gardens following Northampton's shock relegation from the Guinness Premiership.
Smith has formed the cornerstone of the Northampton front row for eight seasons, making over 200 appearances for the Midlands club.
And it's with a heavy heart; Mallinder waves a fond farewell to his veteran prop.
"Tom has been one of the best players in the world in his position and it has been a pleasure to work with him over the past two years," said director of rugby Mallinder.
"What he has achieved during his career is something young players should aspire to.
"He has played at the highest level, won a test series with the Lions and experienced all the highs and lows that come with professional sport.
"I, like everyone here at the Saints, would like to wish Tom all the best for the future."
