Scottish Rugby see the light over Murrayfield pitch
The Scottish Rugby Union unveiled plans to overhaul the Murrayfield pitch and training facilities with a seven-figure makeover.
Mobile lighting arms, that are used at such clubs as Barcelona and Manchester United, will be employed on the Murrayfield pitch to help the turf cope with the twin demand of rugby matches and concerts.
Such was the strain that for the first time in four year, the pitch had to be torn up and reseeded after hosting both the Emirates Sevens Series and the rugby league Murrayfield Magic weekend in May.
But Murrayfield Stadium Manager Mark Laidlaw believes those problems will be a thing of the past once Stadium Growth Lighting (SGL) is employed.
He said: "We're purchasing six units which will cover a third of the pitch at any one time, plus two single units for areas of specifically hard use such as where logos have been painted. Three 'passes' of these units will cover the whole pitch.
"The pitch held up well last season and, with the new lights, we will now be able to grow grass during the winter months, ensuring it will be in great shape for the seasons ahead."
Over £2million will also be invested in the four back pitches including an IRB-compliant 3G artificial pitch.
