McKenzie has taste for first-team action

Edinburgh’s Fraser McKenzie may be a flanker by trade but the 21-year-old insists he is happy to throw himself into the boiler room – if it means more game time under his belt.

The 21-year-old’s made his competitive debut in last Friday’s 62-13 demolition of Connacht as a lock and although that lasted only 12 minutes McKenzie insisted he loved every second of it.

And now McKenzie – who is the youngest player in Edinburgh’s squad – has set his sights on forcing his way past Edinburgh’s established names onto Rob Moffat’s teamsheet whether that’s in the back or second row.

He said: “I’ve waited a long time to be involved - the previous two times I’ve been on the bench for Edinburgh in a Magners League game I’ve not gone on, so it was a bit of a relief to get on.

“I’m 6ft 6in, so I’m probably big enough to play in the second row and if I’m required to play there then I more than happy to do so.

“I think that suits me because, even though you don’t want to be known as being just a utility forward, I will play anywhere to get games.

“I just want to play week in, week out for Edinburgh. When I’m involved in the match day 22 I feel I’m learning from the experience.”
