Lewis spoils Melrose party at the Melrose Sevens

Melrose were stunned by South African speedster Earl Lewis as Johannesburg University upstaged the odds to capture Melrose Sevens glory at the weekend.

The hosts, pre-tournament favourites, were undone by the electric pace of Lewis, who notched a hat-trick as his side claimed a thrilling 35-21 victory in the final.

Melrose had been in inspired form as they looked set to capture the oldest sevens tournament in the world ? dating back to 1883 ? as they breezed their way into the final.

Led by Graeme Dodds, who was also a losing finalist in 2005, Melrose racked up a 52-12 victory over Hawick, before seeing off Heriots 14-5 and Glasgow Hawks 40-5.

But they had no answer to the 21-year-old Springbok, ensuring a Scottish team has still not won the competition since Boroughmuir did so in 2002.

"We ultimately made too many mistakes in the final and the boys are gutted because they knew it was there for the taking,? said Melrose coach Craig Chalmers.

It was Fijian sevens legend Waisale Serevi who stole the spotlight at Greenyards however, as the 40-year-old finally took centre stage at the home of sevens rugby.

Representing Leeds Metropolitan University, Serevi brought the curtain down on his illustrious career as the Yorkshire side crashed to a first-round defeat.
