Sean Lamont encouraged by free-flowing Magners League
SCOTLAND and Scarlets winger Sean Lamont found the Guinness Premiership’s win-at-all-costs mentality ‘stifling’ and insists the Magners League is the place for entertainment.
Lamont left Northampton after an injury-hit last season to put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Nigel Davies’ Scarlets in May.
Having already sampled both competitions during his time with Glasgow, the 28-year-old is relieved to be returning to the Celtic League.
He said: “There was a combination of reasons for me leaving Northampton but having played for Glasgow in the Magners League I definitely found more attacking opportunities in the back line.
“The Premiership is a tough league and if you merged the teams together they would be very evenly matched – you just need to look to the European results for that.
“There’s a very different style because there is no relegation in the Magners League, teams look to attack and entertain more.
“The threat of relegation in the Premiership makes the games win-at-all-costs affairs.
“With European qualification there’s always so much on the line and coaches want to play safety-first rugby. As a back I found it stifling.”
