Nathan Hines and Ross Ford given chance to stake Lions test claim
Scottish forwards Nathan Hines and Ross Ford have been handed a chance to stake a claim for a test place after being named in the side to face the Emerging Springboks on Tuesday.
Hines, who started the last game in the backrow, returns to his familiar position at lock and has potentially the most to gain with a place in the boiler room at Loftus Versfeld for grabs according to scrum coach Graham Rowntree.
Hooker Ford is also in with a shout of selection after Lee Mears' unconvincing performance on Saturday although Wales' Matthew Rees is in pole position to start in the No.2 shirt.
Scottish captain Mike Blair is named on the bench behind English scrum-half Harry Ellis and coach Ian McGeechan promised every player the chance to state their case.
He said: "It's quite important for us to play some of the players and give them game time with a view to selection for Saturday.
"We are not picking the Test team until Wednesday. The way the players trained today, there is no doubt they want to put themselves in the front line as much as possible.
"For a coach it's ideal. There is still a lot to play for and the players know that."
