Nathan Hines 'delighted' by Lions call-up
Surprise Lions pick Nathan Hines is expecting a 'physical' encounter in South Africa this summer after being one of only two Scotland internationals selected for this summer's tour.
The 32-year-old, who plays for Perpignan, joins Euan Murray as Scotland's sole representatives in Ian McGeechan's 37-man touring party.
Hines, who was watching the announcement from his home in France, admitted he was in the toilet when his name was read out by Lions chief Gerald Davies live on television.
And the first Hines heard of his inclusion by McGeechan was a selection of congratulatory text messages from friends and colleagues.
"I've worked really hard since January when I injured my knee and it's a road I've been down before," said Hines, who suffered his injury playing for club-side Perpignan.
"I'm delighted, South Africa is the toughest team to play against physically, in my experience, and that's a challenge I'm really looking for.
"I'd gone for a nervous trip to the loo and started to get text messages of congratulations in before the announcement on my screen. It's still only just sinking in."
Lions' assistant boss Shaun Edwards explained Hines and England lock Simon Shaw had been picked because of their bulk.
"We have picked beasts for this tour," said Edwards. "It's going to be a physical tour, South Africa probably has the biggest pack on the planet and they can play as well.
"I think our selection reflects that and we have picked some big guys in there to meet the challenge.
"We have a big pack with players that we know are physical but who can also carry the ball. Nathan Hines is like that, Simon Shaw too."
