Godman drop goal keeps Edinburgh top

Phil Godman’s late drop goal saw Edinburgh complete a comeback 16-13 victory over Ulster and maintain their 100per cent record in the Magners League.

Edinburgh got off to the worst possible start as they conceded two tries in the space of five minutes.

On 16 minutes Scotland wing Simon Danielli set up flanker Stephen Ferris – who appeared for the Lions over the summer – for the opening try before full-back Clinton Schifcofske got the second moments later.

However neither try was converted and Edinburgh hit back when Dutch wing Tim Visser turned on the afterburners through some feeble Ulster tackles.

Chris Paterson converted but Ian Humphreys’ penalty on the stroke of halftime made it 13-7 to the home team.

Scotland captain Mike Blair’s introduction was the catalyst for an Edinburgh fightback with Paterson expertly kicking two penalties to draw the visitors level.

With nine minutes remaining fly-half Godman dropped a goal and Edinburgh withstood some late Ulster pressure to keep their winning record intact.

Meanwhile Glasgow slipped to their first defeat of the season as Newport's blistering start helped them to a 30-19 victory at Rodney Parade.

The Warriors shot themselves in the foot from the off as James Arlidge intercepted a loose pass and raced in from the halfway line before converting his own try.

Dan Parks reduced the lead with a penalty but on 15 minutes Tom Riley set up full-back Jason Tovey for a well-worked try.

Parks struck another penalty but they were effectively consigned to the defeat straight from the restart when Riley again created a try for wing Aled Brew to make it 19-6.

The visitors hit back with their only try of the game as wing Colin Shaw finished off from close range with Parks converting.

Tovey and Parks exchanged penalties before and after the break but on 48 minutes the Dragons got a deserved bonus point as captain Ashley Smith finished off a devastating counter attack.
