Scotland sevens coach Stephen Gemmell eyes Olympic berth in 2016
Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell believes forming a Great Britain side for the 2016 Olympics, should rugby sevens get the nod on Friday, would be a great deal easier than the football team for London 2012 has proved.
Rugby sevens, along with golf, requires a simple majority to gain Olympic inclusion, having successfully made the cut in August when the International Olympic Committee Executive Board cut the shortlist of potential new sports from seven to two.
Traditionally, Great Britain do not enter into the football competition at the Olympics but as hosts in 2012, the British Olympic Association are desperate to take part in all 26 sports.
A Great Britain football team has not been welcomed by the Northern Irish, Welsh and Scottish Football Associations who remain fearful their independence as a separate entity would be compromised.
But Gemmell does not foresee similar problems with rugby sevens.
"Rugby sevens is enjoyed by men and women the world over and is an ideal sport for Olympic inclusion," he said.
"As was demonstrated at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai back in March, both the men's and women's games have worldwide appeal as a fun and exciting sport to play and watch.
"Rugby sevens has a very successful record in similar multi-sports Games such as the Commonwealth Games and it would be fantastic to see the best players in the world compete for an Olympic medal."
