Scotland Sevens squad ambition shown by Delhi training camp
Scotland sevens boss Stephen Gemmell has revealed his side are pulling out all the stops to win gold at the Commonwealth Games – starting with a training camp in Delhi this week.
With the games exactly one year away Gemmell’s side are to spend a week based at Delhi University – the venue of next year’s tournament – and will play against local sides and receive specialist coaching.
Rugby is the first sport to take part in a training camp of this kind and Gemmell insists the trip illustrates the ambition of his side.
“It’s a statement of intent about how seriously we’re taking sevens,” said Gemmell.
“We’ve contracted three fulltime sevens players and now we are holding a week’s training camp exactly one year out from the Commonwealth Games.
“It will give us an invaluable opportunity to experience the conditions and familiarise ourselves with the surroundings.”
The only member of the 12-man squad that is not a fulltime Scotland 7s player, or part of the Scottish Rugby’s National Academy, is 21-year-old Selkirk winger, Lee Jones.
Scotland evens 12-man squad to participate in a week-long training camp in Delhi (Sunday 4 to Sunday 11 October): Mike Adamson, Grant Anderson (Ayr), Tom Brown (Edinburgh Accies), Tom Bury (Boroughmuir), Stuart Dewar (Heriot’s), Michael Doneghan (Stewart’s Melville), Scott Forrest, Peter Jericevich (Glasgow Hawks), Lee Jones (Selkirk), Stuart McInally (Watsonians), Neil Rodger (Haddington), Colin Shaw
