Lions falter to a draw while Hines withdraws early to fuel test place speculation
Willem de Waal kicked a brilliant last-minute conversion to rescue a 13-13 draw for the Emerging Springboks and land a psychological blow on the Lions ahead of the second test.
In appalling conditions, few players in the tourists? side had a chance to impress coach Ian McGeechan although they did establish an early 10-0 lead.
They scored the game's opening try when Riki Flutey latched onto Martyn Williams' offload from an intercept and Irish back Keith Earls jinked his way over the line.
Ronan O'Gara converted having kicked an earlier penalty but just five minutes before the break opposite number Earl Rose made it 10-3.
After Flutey infringed, Rose kicked another penalty to draw the Emerging Boks closer but then missed a very kickable opportunity to bring the home side within a point.
By that stage Scottish lock Nathan Hines had already been replaced, perhaps in preparation for the second test, and replacement fly-half James Hook kicked a late penalty to seemingly seal the game.
But the Lions failed to retain possession from kick-off and the young Boks cleverly worked the ball wide for Danwell Demas to dive over and in driving rain de Waal kicked the extra two point to scenes of jubilation.
