Katherine Grainger refuses to commit to 2012 singles quest
Aberdeen rower Katherine Grainger is refusing to commit herself to the single skull event for the London Olympics – despite a stunning debut season.
The 33 year-old – who has won silver medals at the last three Olympic games – took another silver in the single skulls at the World Championships in Poznan in September.
But Grainger – who has won her Olympic medals in quadruple skulls twice as well as one in the pair – has vowed to keep her options open for 2012.
“I’ll go in the event which gives me the best chance of winning gold,” said Grainger. “I did not really expect to have the kind of year I did in the single sculls. It was more of a personal thing.
“I had never done it and I wanted to challenge myself and people thought I was crazy at first.
“When you are on your own it is definitely tougher and the first half of the season was very uncomfortable.
“As it went on and the results improved I started to get a real desire and then that competitive streak kicked in.”
