Katherine Grainger qualifies for final of world single sculls
Triple Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger has safely qualified for the single sculls final at the World Rowing Championships in Poznan.
Glasgow-born Grainger won Olympic silver in the quad in 2000 and the pair in 2004, before moving back to the quad in Beijing, where she finished again second.
This is the 33-year-old’s debut season in the single and a gold at the Banyoles World Cup was followed up by two fourth place finishes in Munich and Lucerne.
And despite finishing second behind China’s Zhang Xiuyun in 7:30.15 minutes, Grainger admits a similar result in the final, which features Olympic bronze medallist Ekaterina Karsten, will be a tough ask.
“The final will be a very different ball game but I’ll be hoping that I will step up again,” said Grainger.
Grainger was one of six British crews to progress from Thursday’s semi-finals and GB Rowing performance director David Tanner is delighted with the result.
“I’m really pleased that six crews have gone through including four emphatic semi-final wins,” said Tanner.
