Rhona strikes Spanish gold

Rhona MacMillan (Banchory Academy), one of 18 Scots taking part, won the girls’ distance event at the World Schools’ Championship in Madrid. Her schoolmate, Jessica Mason, was fourth.

MacMillan and Mason are both members of the Mar Orienteering Club in Aberdeenshire and they are among a number of youngsters introduced to the sport by coach Denise Wright when they were at primary school.

Rona is the first Scot to win a title in a championship that was staged in Edinburgh last year, and the hopes is that more medals will follow over the weekend.
