Dalkeith's Scott Fraser was left disappointed as he took only a bronze at the British Long Distance Championships at Culbin Forest, Forres.
The British short course champion finished four minutes behind eventual winner and defending champion Oli Johnson (Sheffield University).
Johnson covered the 15.7km course in 81 minutes 20 seconds with Edinburgh University's Fraser timed at 85:24.
It gave Johnson revenge for his defeat by Fraser at a race in the Czech Republic earlier this month.
Fraser, a European junior silver medallist, has a long-term goal of running 10,000m for Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
