18 Scots in GB team for European Winter Youth Olympic Festival
18 Scottish athletes have been selected to represent Team GB at the European Winter Youth Olympic Festival in Slask Beskidy, Poland from 14-21 February.
Five alpine skiers, four cross-country skiers and nine curlers make up the Scottish contingent of the 32-strong British squad. GB will also compete in figure skating and snowboarding.
Indeed, the full British team of curlers is made up of Scots, which will be led by Olympic legend Rhona Martin.
Commenting on the team, Martin said, “The boys and girls have been training hard and are really looking forward to the chance of representing Great Britain in Poland.
“It will be a valuable experience for the youngsters to compete at this event and will benefit them all long term in their curling career. I am sure both teams will do us proud and achieve their full potential and reach the medal podium.”
Mike Hay, former coach to Martin herself and Chef de Mission of the British effort, added, “The EYOWF is an excellent opportunity for our younger winter athletes to participate in a multi sport environment and gain valuable international experience aiding the development of future Team GB athletes.
“We are delighted to be taking such a promising squad to Poland in February which demonstrates Great Britain’s developing strength across a range of winter sports.”
