Scottish golf and rugby representatives delighted with Olympic inclusion
Colin Montgomerie is convinced the inclusion of golf in the 2016 Rio Olympics will lead to an exciting new period for the sport.
Golf – along with rugby sevens – have been voted in to become part of the Olympic programme from 2016 by the International Olympic Committee.
And the European Ryder Cup captain – who lobbied for the inclusion of golf when he spoke to the IOC in June – could not be happier that golfers will have a chance to go for gold.
“I’m delighted,” he said. “I’m very proud to have been a part of the process and it’s a credit to everyone who has given their support.
“I think it’s a significant moment for the game of golf and all the players who compete in 2016 will be part of a truly unique experience.
“I think the decision will see us entering a very exciting time for global golf.”
Gemmell delighted as Sevens is granted Olympic status
Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell has praised the International Olympic Committee’s historic decision to include Rugby Sevens in the Games from 2016 - and believes his players can form the backbone of the team.
Olympic chiefs meeting in Copenhagen today voted by a majority of 81-8 in favour of Sevens being awarded Olympic status for the first time.
And Gemmell – who is currently with his squad in Delhi preparing for next year’s Commonwealth Games – could not be happier that his players will get the chance to go for gold in Rio.
He said: “It’s great news for the sport globally.
“Over the last ten years, the game has grown and we have seen the emergence of countries like Kenya who can now beat any team in the world.
“From a coaching and playing point of view this will be the pinnacle for everyone involved in the game.
“We will aim to give Scottish players the best possible chance of experiencing the Olympic Games in a GB team.”
