Stuart Easton still optimistic on claiming British Superbike title
Stuart Easton insists the MCE Insurance British Superbike title race is far from over – as he bids to put his challenge back on track when history is made at Brands Hatch this weekend.
The Hydrex Honda rider endured a frustrating afternoon at Mallory Park during round seven as an oil leak forced him out of race one before the Scot withdrew after just three laps of the second race after a gamble on tyres backfired when the heavens opened.
To make matters worse championship leader Leon Camier took advantage of two red flags to bag a second and first and extend his lead over third-placed Easton - who turned 26 last month - to 126.5 points.
But with three races scheduled – the first on Saturday – for the first time in BSB history this weekend and a maximum of 75 points up for grabs, Hawick-born rider Easton is adamant he can rein in Camier and his Airwaves Yamaha team mate James Ellison.
“Brands Hatch is probably my favourite circuit – it’s a proper track and hopefully it’ll be a place where I get back to winning ways and get my season back on track,” said Easton – who has 173 points to his name.
“We’ve come a long way since the opening round on the Indy circuit – the bike is holding the line much better and we’ve managed to sort out the steering – so things should be ideal.
“There’s definitely still a chance of catching Camier - realistically it is going to be very difficult but anything can happen in this sport.
“I just need to find my feet in the next race and start picking up points. If I can win at least one race at Brands and pick up podium finishes, I’ll be in with a real chance of at least catching James Ellison and who knows what next.
“I’m going to keep on pushing until the end and until it is mathematically impossible, I’ll still have belief I can win it.”
