Spence into semis

Inverness' Mhairi Spence produced a stunning run/shoot to win her semi-final and qualify for Sunday's final of the Modern Pentathlon World Championships.

Spence looked in terrific form throughout the day, earning 1032 fencing points and clocking 2:17.98, worth 1148 points in the swim, starting the combined event in third place behind double world champion Amelie Caze and Athens Olympic gold medallist Zsuzsanna Voros.

And the win was never in doubt, with 23-year-old Spence proving unstoppable with the gun to overcome European champion Caze.

Now Spence, who finished fifth at the Rome World Cup in May, has her eyes on a world championship medal.

"It was hard because I was so over-excited about being here I woke up this morning and just wanted to get out there," she said.

"I've had adrenalin up to my eyeballs all day" worse than normal!

"But I had a great fence this morning and really worked on staying in control and not getting carried away.

"My second two shooting rounds were perfect fives so I can't complain,it was good fun.

"It was great to go out there, do a combined and produce a great performance.

"I'm quietly confident about Sunday but it's a new day and we have the riding to come."

Fellow Scot Freyja Prentice also qualified to round off a superb afternoon for the Great British women, with all four athletes making it into the final.
