Spence helps GB to team silver at World Championships amid controversy
Inverness’ Mhairi Spence won team silver with Great Britain team-mates Heather Fell and Katy Livingston at the Modern Pentathlon World Championships at Crystal Palace.
But the medal was not without controversy after Livingston dropped from first to 23rd in the final two events after her show jumping round was interrupted by a broken fence.
And 23-year-old Spence - who finished 14th in the individual event - admits it's a case of what might have been.
“It’s a good result but obviously there was a bit of a blip in the riding for Katy and that scuppered our chances of a gold,” said Spence.
“I thought we had dropped down to bronze and we came out with a silver medal so I can’t really complain."
Fellow Scot Freyja Prentice finished one place behind Spence - and the 19-year-old admits she surpassed even her own expectations.
"I just wanted to get into the final - once I got there I wanted to finish top-20 and I did!
"I'm thrilled with how it went, just ecstatic - I couldn't have asked for any more."
