Spence comes close

Inverness’ Mhairi Spence just missed out on a second medal at the Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Crystal Palace.

On the final day of competition, Spence, and Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell, teamed up in the relay only to finish fourth, failing to add to the team silver they won along with Katy Livingston.

The pair looked set to take gold after they started the run/shoot as leaders and Spence opened up a 20-metre lead after her two laps.

But Fell took the full 70 seconds on her first shoot to fall into fifth and the 26-year-old could only claw her way back up to fourth on the second lap, with the Czech Republic winning their second gold of the day, Germany taking silver and Poland bronze.

"We got where we were by pulling together throughout the day but it just didn't work out at the end," said Spence.

"It's obviously disappointing, but it just makes us want to work harder.

"It's been really good fun competing here and the organisation of the competition has gone really well.

"I'm exhausted now, but I think it's my most enjoyable world championships so far."
