Spence and Helyer selected for GB Euro squad

Scotland's Mhairi Spence and Louise Helyer have been named in a nine-strong squad for the European Modern Pentathlon Championships in Leipzig later this month.

23-year-old Spence, from Inverness, has fond memories of the European Championships, having captured bronze in 2006 and will head to Germany with confidence sky high, having finished fifth in the final World Cup of the year in Rome.

She is joined in the women's ranks by Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell, as well as 2007 World Championships bronze medallist Katy Livingston, as well as Louise Helyer.

In the men's ranks, Beijing Olympians Nick Woodbridge and Sam Weale are joined by Russell North and Gareth Evans, while Lee Ormerod will make the trip for the team relay.

"It's a significant competition for us because of the traditional strength of our sport in Europe," said Pentathlon GB Performance Director Jan Bartu.

"There will have been a month between the last World Cup and the European Championships so this will also be a benchmarking competition for us leading up to the World Championships."
