Karate kids on podium in Portugal
Eastbank Karate Club had reason to celebrate as a group of young students returned as winners from an international competition.

The club brought home four gold medals, one silver and two bronze from the Portugal International Open Karate contest held on the outskirts of Lisbon. Over 900 competitors from 17 countries took part in the competition and Eastbank had the second best medal haul of the 113 clubs involved.

Eastbank won their medals in the Kumite - sparring. 

Aaron Horn (15) - Gold, Kimberley Johnstone (13) - Gold, James Coulter (12) - Gold, Ross Marsham (16) - Silver, Amanda Dundas (13) - Bronze

Head coach at the club Gerry Fleming was delighted with the performance of all the youngsters from the Glasgow area.

He said: "They have been training very hard for this event and during a recent warm up at a regional contest in Wishaw the youngsters took two gold, two silver and two bronze medals which gave them a massive boast prior to flying out to Portugal last Friday."

The youngsters are now back into training for the next major contest of the year which will be the Scottish International Open which is to be held in Edinburgh, starting on 23 April.

Some of the squad members are also up for selection for the Scotland Karate Squad who will be travelling to Malaysia in October to take part in the World Karate Federation Junior and Cadet World Championships with over 100 countries expected to take part in the most prestigious event in the karate world.
