Burton predicts bright future for Scottish judo

Judo star Euan Burton insists the future is bright for Scottish judo with the likes of talented duo Sam Clark and Craig Stewart hot on his heels.

Burton has both world and European bronze medals to his name but as yet an Olympic medal has eluded the 30-year-old.

Stewart, 19, fights in the -81kg weight category like Burton while Livingston-born 18-year-old Samantha Clark fights in the -52kg and was fifth at last year’s World Junior Championships.

And Burton admits he is anxiously looking over his shoulder with the emerging talent in Scottish judo.

“Sam Clark is one of the girls in our training group and she is coming through really well and Craig Stewart is another guy who is looking really good,” said Burton.

“We have got some really good younger players at the moment and with the changes to the judo set up that can only stand them in good stead in the years to come.

“There is no doubt that there are some great players around and that can only be good for the rest of the sport in Scotland.”
