Sally Conway the top performing Scot with fifth place at World's
Edinburgh’s Sally Conway came fifth in the -70kg class after losing her repechage final at the Judo World Championships in Rotterdam on Saturday.
The 22-year old has been Great Britain’s only shining light in the Netherlands after experienced judokas Euan Barton and Sarah Clark were unceremoniously dumped out in the early rounds of the -81kg and -57kg respectively.
But after defeating Switzerland’s Juliane Robra in the first round of the repechage, the Scot couldn’t repeat the feat against Japan’s Mina Watanabe, losing to a solitary ippon.
Winston Gordon enjoyed moderate success in the -90kg but came unstuck one round away from qualifying for the repechage.
After good wins against Mongolia’s Batbayar Ariun-Erdene and Argentina’s Diego Rosati in the early rounds, the Brit met his match in Egypt’s Hesham Mesbah and went down to a single Yuko.
Fellow Brit Samantha Lowe was also in action on Saturday but lost a tricky first round encounter to American Kayla Harrison in the -78kg category.
