Burton continues GB's poor form at World Championships

Former world bronze medallist Euan Burton continued Great Britain's miserable form at the World Judo Championships in Rotterdam.

The -81kg Edinburgh fighter won his second European bronze in April 2007 and followed it up with World Championship bronze in Rio de Janeiro five months later.

But the 30-year-old has failed to makle an impact since, losing out in the repechage in Beijing and missing out on a medal at April's European Championships in Georgia.

And Burton's run of form continued in Holland, where he lost to Montenegro's Srdjan Mrvaljevic in a fight which went the full five minutes.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh’s Sarah Clarke went one better – courtesy of a bye – but crashed out in the second round of the -57kg category to eventual semi-finalist Kaori Matsumoto of Japan.

And Kimberley Renicks suffered a first round exit also.  The 21 year-old from Coatbridge, making her debut at the event, lost to European champion Frederique Jossinet (France), the Olympic silver medallist in 2004, in the Under-48kg event.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s Faith Pitman beat Belgium's Katrien Verheeke in her opening -63kg fight.

But in a tight second round fight which went the distance, Germany's Claudia Malzahn ensured Pitman was the eighth British player sent packing - six of whom went out in the first round.
