Success for GB women

Great Britain women got their Olympic preparations off to a flying start at the weekend by winning the Setanta Trophy in Dublin with a 4-1 over Germany, the reigning Olympic and European Champions, in the final.

It was a sound thrashing for the Germans, who scored their consolation goal with only four minutes remaining.

Laura Bartlett, the only Scot in the squad, made a substitute appearance in the second half.

Meanwhile the men, who had several Scots involved, secured third place in their Setanta tournament with a 2-1 win over Ireland, Inverleith’s  Stephen Dick getting his name on the score-sheet.

An error in the Ireland defence saw the ball turned over and Dick drive into the Irish circle.   The Scotland international made no mistake and his powerful shot from the left of the area proved too much for the opposition keeper.

Ali McGregor, Niall Stott and Graham Moodie also started for GB.

Team Manager Pete Nicholson commented, “We’re in the middle of a three week concentrated period of training, so the guys are pretty tired, but that’s ok because we’re not planning on peaking now, that’s for August.

I’m happy with the week we’ve had in Ireland, we’ve got some matches under our belt and we’ve come through them with no injuries, so we’re well on course.”
