GB men and women finish above rankings in Olympics
Both Great Britain’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have secured a finish in the Olympics higher than their world ranking.
By defeating Korea 5-2, GB men recorded a fifth place finish, their best since the gold medal winning exploits of the 1988 team (ironically in Korea) and three places higher than their world ranking of eight.
The Koreans, ranked five in the world, were silver medallists at Sydney 200, and this was the heaviest defeat they had suffered in the competition.
Both Scots in the squad, Stephen Dick and Ali McGregor, started for Team GB. Dick looked dangerous throughout, and came close to scoring twice, while McGregor once again put in a solid shift, concreting his status as one of the players of the tournament.
Meanwhile GB women suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of arch-rivals Australia. However, despite the loss, the team still finished sixth overall for the Olympics, three places higher than their world ranking of nine.
Scot Laura Bartlett, drafted into the side midway through the Olympics to replace an injured player, made her third appearance in the tournament coming off then bench.
Looking ahead to London in four years’ time, GB women’s Head Coach Danny Kerry said: “We have so many young players we will be trying to push through and I’m very excited at this."
Performance Director David Faulkner said “I am delighted for the men because they have clearly demonstrated that the fifth place in the World Cup two years ago was not a one off. We are now competing with the top six sides in the world and have a fantastic platform on our journey towards 2012.”
