Cup joy for Glasgow clubs as indoor season reaches climax
It was good times for Glasgow in the finals of the indoor Scottish Cup at the weekend, as Azzurri Kelburne men and Milne Craig Western women romped to victory in their showpiece matches against Inverleith and Bonagrass Grove respectively.
It was 13 minutes before Ian Scholefield opened the scoring for Kelburne, and Kenny Bain and Alan Forsyth made it 3-0 by half-time. But Inverleith fought back through Callum Milne and Adam McKenzie to keep spectators enthralled.
Then Bain and Scholefield restored Kelburne’s three-goal advantage and, although John Harris and McKenzie added to Inverleith’s tally, Willie Marshall and Forsyth were on hand to ensure a famous Kelburne 7-4 victory - the first indoor trophy for the habitual outdoor champions.
In the women’s final, Julie Bryce set Western on their winning way with the first of three goals, and Helen Walker also scored within six minutes, but Pauline Stott pulled one back at a set-piece just before half-time.
After the interval, a great steal by Walker gave Western a two-goal cushion again, which was further increased by Ellie Cockburn. But strikes by Jaime Lyon and Stott gave Grove genuine expectations when they took the score to 4-3 down.
But the decision to bring Louise Carroll on as kicking back erupted in their faces as Bryce scored twice in the dying minutes to inflict a 6-3 scoreline, the first defeat of the season on the champions.
