Dundee stars enjoy medal moment

Three Dundee hockey players arrived back in Scotland today having won medals with Team GB as part of in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney.

Dundee Wanderer's Becky Ward was part of the women's team which won the gold medal after beating the host nation 3-2 in the final.

Kelburne HC player Ross Stott, younger brother of Athens Olympian Niall, together with travelling reserve, Gavin Byers (Menzieshill HC) helped the British men win the bronze medal after an impressive 5-2 victory over Malaysia.  All three athletes are supported by the Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport.

For the women's team this was a repeat of their AYOF success of two years ago and it all came down to a nail biting finish.

"To beat Australia was amazing," said 20 year old University of Dundee Sport Biomedicine student, Becky Ward.  "We finished the game at 2-2, went into extra time and we scored in last 30 seconds, which was unbelievable.  We had worked so hard for the whole game so it was such a relief."

This was Ward's first time in a British team and the experience will stand her in good stead for possible selection to a future Olympic Games.

"It was all a bit surreal to start with because I had never played for the British team before and it was such a big stage to get to," she said.

"It was a great to play in a multi sport event, and very helpful to have experience of playing in the same style as the GB senior team play.

"It was good to see what they are looking for and what you have to do to get to the top."
