King Kenny slams six past Poland
Six goals from Azzurri Kelburne striker Kenny Bain was the catalyst in Scotland`s U21 side`s victory in three test matches against Poland in Poznan this past weekend. A good omen for manager Tom Johnston as Poland are in Scotland`s pool in the European Nations Championships in San Sebastian later this month.
A hat-trick from the 18-year-old Bain was the driving force behind the 5-4 winning score in the opening encounter; other goals came from Kelburne club mate Michael Christie and Western Wildcats` striker Donald Abbot. The score line might have been a little more comfortable but for individual errors that presented the Poles with cheap goals.
There was a better structure to the second match and the Scots looked to have the game sewn up when Bain scored from open play, but their hosts equalised in the dying seconds.
The Scots romped into a four goal lead in the final encounter, Daniel Coultas opened from a penalty corner, Bain added two more, and Inverleith`s Chris Grassick pounced on a rebound from a penalty corner. The Scots took their feet off the pedal and the Poles brought the score line back to 4-2, but a strike from Callum Milne finally settled the affair, 5-3 was the final score.
Johnston said: "Overall this was a successful outing as objectives set in training were largely achieved, we now look forward to the Europeans in two week`s time."
Meanwhile Scotland’s U18 boys saw opposite results against Poland in their two final matches of the Four Nations Tournament winning 4-2 on Saturday and losing 4-2 on Sunday in Poznan for a fourth place finish.
Calum Wood, Scottish head coach commented: “Overall our performance was not good enough to reach the final but we are improving. We’ve been too inconsistent and that is a key learning point for the squad. Too often, our basic skills were not at the right level to maintain possession and control play in vital phases of our matches against Poland.”
