Young Scot called up

Ten-year-old Scot Stephen Tonge has been named as one of 26 British gymnasts earmarked as stars of the future. Taking the long term view towards success, the squad has been chosen with the 2016 Olympic Games as the ultimate target.

Stephen, who is coached by Andrew Webb at the Falkirk Club, has gained selection following some outstanding performances at the Elite Grade Finals in Newcastle at the start of the month.

The first of five weekend training sessions this year will take place at the National Centre in Lilleshall in Shropshire next month.

It is going to be a big commitment for the young gymnasts. In addition to the squad weekend sessions, they will also be monitored at club level.

One of the lead coaches for the squad is a Scot, the GB National Junior Coach Barry Collie, while there will also be input from Sergei Sizhanov and overall direction form the Technical Director, Eddie Van Hoof.
