Regan looks to follow in the footsteps of Beth Tweddle
City of Glasgow gymnast Amy Regan is desperate to follow in the footsteps of Team GB star Beth Tweddle by competing at either the 2012 or 2016 Olympic Games.
The Woodfarm High School pupil, who will head to the British Team Championships in two weeks time, received an Olympic boost this week after being reselected to join the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes initiative.
The 14-year-old attended an Olympic masterclass at Heriots-Watt University with former Team GB stars Campbell Walsh and Katharine Merry, where she received expert advice on nutrition, big-competition preparation and injury-prevention.
The City of Glasgow Gymnast Club member, who was the 2006 Espoir Floor Champion and finished seventh in the vault final at the British Championships in 2008, is convinced her Edinburgh experience is just the kick-start she needs to achieve her Olympic dream.
"Going to 2012 and beyond is a dream come true and I can't wait for the years to come to see what they hold," said Regan, who will receive £1,000 towards the cost of training and competing.
"I have got the British Team Championships coming up in about two weeks and I also hope to go abroad again before the year is out.
"I know Beth Tweddle quite well and I watched her on the TV when she was in Beijing and I would love to go to an Olympics just like she did.
"The scheme was really good last year and it really helped me perform and eased the strain on my mum a bit financially.
"The masterclass was really enjoyable and because the sport is all year round I am always training and working to better myself."
