More glory for Keatings

Scotland's Danny Keatings completed an outstanding European Championships by adding individual gold medals in the pommel horse and floor to the junior team and overall titles in Lausanne in Switzerland.

It was the best ever haul of medals by a British gymnast at a major championship - and it puts the 18-year-old bang on course for Olympic selection in Beijing in August.

"I am way over the moon," admitted the youngster. "To be going home with four gold medals is terrific."

At last year's Europeans, Keatings won silver on the Pommel horse in the senior event - he was the youngest Briton to make a podium in the Championships.

But he stepped back to the junior event this year to lead the British team, and also to prove that he is one of the best in the world in his age-group.

"Everyone expected me to win the Pommel which brought some extra pressure, so that has to be my favourite of the four golds," he continued. "As captain of the GB Junior team, I felt a big responsibility to help and encourage the younger boys. They really delivered the result."

Paul Hall, Keating's personal Coach at the Huntingdon Club in Cambridgeshire, was delighted with his young charge. "Daniel has shown he is not simply a specialist, but a great all-rounder," he said.

"From here, everything is about the Olympic Games. There are Grand Prix events in Moscow and Barcelona before the selection is made, and then, hopefully, it will be to add the final finishing touches and boost the confidence for Beijing."

The two British team spots are to be named at the end of May. Keatings and his team mate and world championship pommel horse bronze medallist, Louis Smith, are firm favourites to claim the places.
