Keatings chasing European dream for second year running
Scotland's Olympic hopeful Danny Keatings claimed a place in history by becoming the youngest Briton to win a medal in the senior competition at last year's European Championships.
This time, his goal is to lead the British Junior team onto the podium in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"Considering he was just 17, Danny did amazingly well to get a silver on the pommel horse last year," said his coach at the Huntingdon club, Paul Hall. "But this year, he is just going to compete in the junior championships.
"It's a tactical decision. It is his final year in the under-18s and Danny will really strengthen the British team. It is also a chance to prove that he is one of the very best all-rounds gymnasts in the world for his age."
This month, Keatings has already proved he is in the form of his life, posting a career best total in spearheading Britain to victory and winning the all-round individual title at a Junior International against France, Switzerland and hosts Germany in Monheim.
"It was great to produce a PB and gives me a lot of confidence going to Lausanne," said Keatings. "The Europeans are really the final event to make my mark before the Olympic selection at the end of this month."
There are two GB Olympic places up for garbs- and Keatings and world championships medallist Louis Smith are the current favourites.
"There are still a few others who could make it," warned Keatings, who will also be competing in Grand Prix tournaments in Moscow and Barcelona later in the month. "But it would be great if Louis and I do get to the Olympics. We train together and it is a great, friendly rivalry. We push each other on."
Britain's Technical Director, Eddie Van Hoof, has high hopes of success this weekend in Switzerland. "It's a great junior team - the goal is to medal," he said.
