More glory for Keatings in Russian event
Just days before he hopes to gain his British Olympic team selection, Scotland's Danny Keatings has won gold on the pommel horse at the "World Stars" competition in Moscow.
Keatings, who won the European Junior Championship overall title in Lausanne earlier this month, finished just ahead of his Huntingdon clubmate, Louis Smith, who was a bronze medallist at last year's world championships.
The results could not have come at a better time for the pair coached by Paul Hall. Moscow was the final World Cup qualifier before the Olympic Games in Beijing and Britain is due to announce the names f the two male individual athletes this weekend.
In Moscow, Danny qualified in first position for the final (15.825), with the current Senior European Champion and World Silver medalist, Krisztian Berky from Hungary, in second (15.575), and Louis in third (15.525).
In the final, Danny produced a brilliant routine, increasing his difficulty with 0.20pts (from 6.50to 6.70) to achieve a well-deserved 15.975. Performing last, Louis scored 15.850 to take the silver, leaving Berki with the bronze (15.725).
"To win gold and silver in Moscow is the dream come true," said Hall. "We have worked so hard to achieve this result and hope that everything with our preparation for Beijing will continue to work according to our plans."
