Laing taking final stab at making LPGA in Florida qualifying school
Scotland’s Vikki Laing bids to get her career back on track as one of 140 hopefuls taking part in the final LPGA Tour qualifying school in Florida.
The Musselburgh 27-year-old held a non-exempt card for the leading women’s tour in 2004 and 2005, but has been confined to the US Futures circuit for the past three years. Last year, she became the first Scot to win a Futures tournament at the Gettysburg International.
Having already survived the pre-qualifying school in September, Laing faces a tough five round test with only around the top 20 from the 140-strong field earning cards for the 2009 season. There will be a cut to the top 70 and ties for the final 18 holes.
If she does succeed, Laing, who won a record four Scottish Girls’ Championships and played in the 2002 Curtis Cup as an amateur, will join Catriona Matthew Janice Moodie and Mhairi McKay as Scots on the LPGA Tour.
The biggest name taking part in the 90-hole examination is Michelle Wie. The 19-year-old Hawaiian has already had a string of top ten finishes in majors, but has struggled to find form since breaking her wrist at the beginning of last year.
Wie, who turned professional as a 15-year-old, easily survived the pre-qualifying but will face huge pressure to make the grade this week.
