University of Stirling on top
University of Stirling golfers were crowned European Universities champions with a clean sweep of the prizes in Slovenia.

Stirling’s men’s and women’s players won the team titles at the 2nd European Universities Golf Championship while the individual titles were also claimed by scholarship golfers from Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence.

Sports Studies student Graeme Robertson finished five shots ahead of his Stirling team mate David Booth to win the men’s individual title while Harriet Beasley edged out Stirling fresher Hannah McCook by one shot for the women’s title.

Saltires were emblazoned proudly atop the leaderboard throughout the four rounds at Otocec, with seven of Stirling’s eight representatives finishing amongst the top four.

The Stirling players were: Men: Graeme Robertson (Larbert) 1st; David Booth (Rotherham) 2nd; Alex Culverwell (Edinburgh) tied 3rd; Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock) tied 3rd; Bobby Rushford (Falkirk) 21st. Women: Harriet Beasley (Woburn) 1st; Hannah McCook (Speyside) 2nd; Jordana Graham (Southerness) 4th.

Fresh from victory in the Scottish Golf Union’s (SGU) South East District Championship at Musselburgh and second-place at the Northern Open, Glenbervie golfer Robertson handled the conditions in Slovenia perfectly.

He said: “I’ve had a really good season this year and felt confident going into the event. It was a tight course and you needed to be straight off the tee which was perfect for me. I played really well and everything came together with that wee bit of luck too which you need to win a tournament.

“Our coaches were keeping us up-to-date with what was going on so we knew Stirling were going to finish high up. It’s a great way for the team to finish and caps a really good season of golf.

“In the last year I’ve been doing my studies part-time, which allowed me to put the hours in to my golf and it has proven to be the right decision. There was the option of going to tour school this year, but I would like to finish my degree first and keep on improving my golf.”

Robertson, 23, who finished second in the SGU Order of Merit, has one more event before he can turn his attention back to his studies, representing Scotland at the Turkish Amateur Open Golf Tournament later this month.

In Slovenia, the Stirling team was supported by men’s coach Dean Robertson and women’s coach Lesley Mackay, as well as by Sports Performance Manager Raleigh Gowrie.

Coach Robertson, a former European Tour professional, said: “The result in Slovenia was the culmination of a year’s hard work and Graeme [Robertson] really flew the flag for the University and for Scotland. His performance in Slovenia was second-to-none and the Stirling team were also exceptional.

“As the Scottish, British and now European Universities team champions, they have performed well throughout the year and can be proud of their achievements. The hard work starts again now as they look to build on this success at Stirling.”
